While MMpire conducted a research interview, we were required to interview a tenure track or tenure professor from Jackson State University. This gave our group, The MMpire, the opportunity to speak personally with Dr. Hilliard Lackey, learn about his individual research and find out what he is currently doing with his disciplines.
At most smaller schools, an employee's qualification for residency is dictated by first by showing capacity, second by production record (scholarly or inventive, contingent upon what the applicant was enlisted to instruct), and third by a blend of departmental administration (cooperation in different staff councils) and understudy advising. At bigger schools, the capacity to pull in financing and distribute exploration assumes a much bigger part in residency choices.
Sydney Forbes, a member of the MMpire, took the time to email Dr. Hilliard Lackey for our person for the research interview. She thought it would be more fitting to conduct an interview on him because of his strong knowledge in research and the writing of books where he talked about women negative image. Forbes then emailed Dr. Lackey and he agreed.
With a big smile amongst Dr. Hilliard Lackey face, he greeted us ready for his interview with the MMpire.
LaPorsha Conerly, a member of the MMpire, gave Dr. Lackey a complete run down on what the MMpire was about and the reason behind our decision on the topic of our choice, “The Media’s Negative Portrayals of African American Women in Hip-Hop Music Videos.”
Dr. Hilliard L. Lackey is a tenured professor who currently serves as Visiting Professor of Urban Higher Education for the Jackson State University (JSU) Executive Ph.D. Program. He earned degrees (B.A., History and Political Science, MS. Ed. in Educational Administration and Supervision, and the Ed. S. in Educational Administration) from Jackson State University and the Ph.D. in Higher Education administration from University of Mississippi. He has been an administrator and professor at JSU including; Director of Alumni Affairs, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President. He has also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Enrollment Management at Lemoyne-Owen (Memphis, TN). Dr. Lackey is a 2008 inductee into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame, 2003 Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund HBCU Alumnus of the Year, 1997 NAFEO Distinguished alumni Award honoree, and in 2004, the McCormick Freedom Museum of Chicago placed his quote on a monument. He was a Fulbright Fellow to North Africa (the Maghreb) and is an authority on the Historical Geography of the Mississippi Delta.
The MMpire decided to do this research interview by video recording and audio recording the whole research interview so that would could make sure we had enough information when it came to our study and knowledge.
Before asking Dr. Hilliard Lackey any type of questions, Aniecia Brewster, a member of MMpire, presented him with a consent form that he had to sign to verify that he gave the MMpire permission to conduct the interview and allowed to posted it on the MMpire website. Dr. Lackey agreed by signing the form.
During the interview process, Aniecia Brewster was the videographer during the interview, LaPorshan Conerly was the audio recorder during the interview and Sydney Forbes asked Dr. Lackey the following questions during the interview. Forbes first asked Dr. Lackey to state his full name and his degree. Dr. Hilliard was also asked; can you remember taking research as an undergraduate? Where did you complete your graduate education? What was the topic of your dissertation? What type of research did you conduct? Qualitative or Quantitative? Why? How important do you think it is for undergraduates to complete a course in research methods? Why do you think students shy away so much from conducting or being involved in conducting research? What are some areas in (whatever their discipline) that you are working on now and any suggestions for other researchers?
Aspen Wilson was the group leader who helped keep the interview together and run in a timely manner. LaPorshan Conerly, and Aniecia Brewster also participated in asking question toward the closer of the interview because Dr. Lackey was excited to hear from the whole group and not just one person.
The MMpire conducted the research interview as a team and were able to get a better insight into there research by conducting an interview with Dr. Lackey. Dr. Lackey gave his personal experience of African American from when he was growing up until now.
“Things have truly changed since I was growing up. Today I wont even watch anything pass PG-13 because it’s just wrong. A woman half naked on television is just wrong. You can’t judge a woman for what she does but I don’t have to watch a woman destroy her image since she is half naked,” said Dr. Hilliard Lackey.
The MMpire wants to give a special Thank You to Dr. Hilliard Lackey for allow us to interview him for our research methods class for our topic we were conducting study on.
