Methodology

The MMpire’s research was conducted from November 2015 to December 2015 and was held on the campus of Jackson State University in Jackson, MS, USA. Our research was gathered by obtaining quantitative data by conducting surveys by using non-random probability and snowball sampling. Quantitive research works best for our research because it allows us to successfully reach our overall objective in answering our question.

Due to the content of the study, we asked the initial survey-takers who agreed to take part in the research to help identify other students and individuals who may be willing to take part in our pilot research study. Initial survey-takers help identify additional units that will make up our sample-size, which is the process of a snowball sampling procedure. The process continues until sufficient units (50 surveys) have been identified to meet the desired sample size.

We are using a quantitative approach because it allows us to successfully collect numerical data to conquer and solidify our objective. Through our objective research and a quantitative approach, we are allowed to receive statistics while also avoiding bias in measurement by using standardized measurement tools by using defined data categories. Basically, we are measuring what happens rather than how someone feels about what happens (perceptions). After the process of analyzing our collection of data, the information will then be generalizable. Generalizability refers to the idea that our pilot study through research will tell us something about a group larger than the sample from which the findings were generated.

The population refers to the set of individual units in which the research question seeks to find out about. Our population of interest is all individuals (regardless of gender and ethnicity) who are between the ages of 18 and 65 who have seen or who watches hip-hop music videos. By the information being generalized, it then can be utilized as a population. In research, this is the principle and foundation of random selection. Random selection is related to sampling, therefore it is most related to being generalizable. After all, we randomly sample so that our research study participants represent the larger group from which they're drawn.

The widespread and easy access to view hip-hop music videos has made it possible for anyone of any age, gender or ethnicity to view those various contents, which are not suitable for everyone. When viewers view hip-hop music videos, we want to know if it has an effect and does it change how viewers view African American women in those videos after watching the videos verses how they felt prior to watching them. Our (sample-size) participants for this study were 50 individuals which whom were selected at random on the campus of Jackson State University. Because of its statistical nature, sample size is very important for quantitative research.

Participants were also between the ages of 18 and 65 and could be of any race, gender and ethnicity. Our surveys were created, gathered and used to solidify our findings by investigating how and if individuals are persuaded when viewing hip-hop music videos and the possible negative effects that can create towards the perceptions of African American women in those videos. Each survey took about 10 minutes to take. In attempts to keep our research as objective as possible, survey-takers were informed we would analyze their responses to successfully complete our research assignment.

In a quantitative research, deal with "numbers" after finalizing the data gathering section of our research. In order to create the "numbers" for our quantitative research (data), a measurement process was needed effectively take place. In order to effectively do so, we used a systematic data analyzation program, SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science). SPSS is a Windows based program that is used to utilize and simplify data entry and analysis to create tables and graphs. SPSS is also capable of handling various amounts of data and can perform all of the analyses covered in the text and more.

Along with the process of gathering statistics to sustain our quantitative research by giving out surveys, we also sat down and gathered the data, perspectives and outlooks on the influences of hip-hop music videos and the negative connotations that can also be involved throughout the media. We have begun working on a website to create a visual learning atmosphere to inform and reach many others to share our interesting and useful information to the public.

In summation, we have thoroughly conducted a pilot study (quantitative research) and have collected all necessary data to successfully support our findings of the possible negative influences that hip-hop music videos can have on those who watch them and the way they feel about African American women in those videos. Our findings have provided us with clarity and enough sustainable evidence through the statistical measurements.
